HathiTrust is an online repository that houses PDF scans of millions of books and other documents. Books that are still under copyright are usually not viewable through HathiTrust. However, due to current events, HathiTrust is allowing us to access PDFs of copyrighted materials if UNL already owns a print copy.
This expanded access to ebooks is called the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS), and about 50% of the UNL Libraries' print book collection is available through HathiTrust right now. Access is restricted to current UNL students, staff, and faculty.
Please note that most HathiTrust books must be "checked out" for one hour, due to licensing restrictions. If no one else is waiting to access the ebook, you can check it out again for another hour. If an ebook is unavailable, that means someone else is currently using it, and you will need to come back later to check it out.
Option 1 - Access a HathiTrust book through the library catalog:
Books available only via HathiTrust will have a link to the ebook in the catalog record, as shown here:
Print books in our collection that are available through HathiTrust will have a link to the ebook (with a square, orange logo) in the lower right corner of the catalog record:
Clicking on these links will bring you to a page with a link to access the ebook.
Make sure you are logged in at the top right corner of the HathiTrust page - you need to log in whether you are on-campus or off-campus.
Now, click "Temporary access," then "Check Out" to read the ebook!
Note: Ebooks that are not part of the Emergency Temporary Access Service do not need to be checked out in this way.
If a book is available through HathiTrust, we cannot lend the print copy at this time.
Option 2 - Search for materials directly in HathiTrust:
